I had a similar issue a while back, and yeah, 6 months is usually the standard. Mine recovered in about 4 months after I fixed the problem, but it really depends on how bad the penalty is. I just focused on improving the actual user experience and cut out anything sketchy. If you clean up whatever caused the drop and wait it out, you should see things improve. If not, switching to a new domain could be worth considering.
