During the last webmaster hangout, Google employee John Mueller elaborated on why sites that use poor SEO tactics and thus violate the rules can rank well.

Müller said that:

  • A website doesn't have to do everything perfectly to rank well. The search engine uses a large number of different signals.
  • Google has many algorithms that evaluate a site.
  • Bad things are often ignored by Google if they don't help a site rank, and they don't always negatively impact its ranking.
  • It's important to focus on improving your site in the long run. Technical factors are still important, but the main thing is the overall quality and the value that the site brings to users. Don't focus on tools and metrics. Focus on quality and value for users.
  • It is also important to ask users if they like the site. To do this, you can use polls and focus groups.
